Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare: Which Is Right for You?

Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare: Which Is Right for You?
One of the first decisions you will face when enrolling in Medicare is whether to stick with Original Medicare or opt for a Medicare Advantage plan. Both have pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your individual needs.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B)

Original Medicare is the traditional fee-for-service program run by the federal government.

Pros: See any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. No network restrictions. Predictable coverage nationwide. Can add Medigap for additional coverage.

Cons: No out-of-pocket maximum. Does not cover prescriptions (need Part D). No extra benefits like dental or vision.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Pros: Often includes Part D, dental, vision, hearing. Lower premiums (sometimes $0). Out-of-pocket maximum limits your costs. May include fitness programs and other extras.

Cons: Usually requires using network providers. May need referrals for specialists. Coverage can change yearly. Limited coverage outside service area.

How to Choose

Consider Medicare Advantage if you want all-in-one coverage, are comfortable with network restrictions, and want extra benefits.

Consider Original Medicare if you travel frequently, want maximum flexibility in providers, and prefer predictable nationwide coverage.
